EGSES24 – 2024 East German State Election Study
A longitudinal survey of 1,200 people in Thuringia, Saxony and Brandenburg before and after the 2024 state elections – on the causes and consequences of voting behaviour.
The state elections in Thuringia, Saxony and Brandenburg in autumn 2024 were awaited with particular suspense. To study the causes and consequences of voting behaviour, the Centre for Research on Right-Wing Extremism, Democracy Education and Societal Integration (KomRex) at Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Chair of Social Psychology at Trier University are conducting a longitudinal survey of 1,200 people in these three states.
The study comprises two waves: the first before the elections (mid/late August 2024) and the second after the elections (mid/late November 2024). In each state, a sample of about 400 adults (over 16), quota-sampled by age and gender, is surveyed online by a professional survey company.
The survey includes a core module of items and scales on
- demographics,
- election-related attitudes and behaviour,
- attitudes towards politics and democracy, and
- ideological attitudes.
In addition, early-career researchers – doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers up to six years after their PhD in the social and behavioural sciences with a quantitative focus – were invited to contribute their own survey modules along KomRex’s thematic priorities (right-wing extremism research, democracy education and societal integration), to analyse and publish independently afterwards.
